New York World's Fair - 2.25 franc

This horizontal commemorative issue from the Côte Française des Somalis marks the territory's symbolic participation in the Exposition Internationale New York 1939. The allegorical composition visualizes a meeting of global cultures, bringing together a veiled woman and traditional dancers from French overseas territories alongside an African figure positioned next to a carved ceremonial mask. In the center, a detailed panoramic vignette anchors the theme in the contemporary era, depicting the rising concrete and steel skyline of Manhattan across the water. Historically, this issue documents how the French postal administration utilized major international exhibitions to project an idealized image of cultural unity and imperial breadth, connecting the remote trading outpost on the Gulf of Tadjoura to global audiences at the dawn of the Second World War.
