Lake Abbe
Issued in 1965, this stamp commemorates Lake Abbe (Lac Abbé), a remarkable saline lake located on the border between present-day Djibouti and Ethiopia. The lake is one of the most distinctive natural landmarks of the region and forms part of the East African Rift system, an area of great geological significance known for its volcanic activity and unique landscapes.
By featuring Lake Abbe, the French Somali Coast (Côte Française des Somalis) highlighted an important element of its natural heritage and promoted awareness of the territory's exceptional geographic environment. The issue celebrated the region's natural beauty and scientific interest, recognizing Lake Abbe as one of the most notable and recognizable natural sites in the Horn of Africa.
