UNESCO world campaign to save historic monuments in Nubia

Issued in 1964, this stamp commemorates the UNESCO International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, a worldwide effort launched to protect ancient Egyptian and Nubian archaeological sites threatened by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The campaign brought together governments, scholars, and cultural organizations from many countries to preserve monuments of exceptional historical and cultural importance before they were inundated by the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

By issuing this commemorative stamp, the French Somali Coast (Côte Française des Somalis) expressed support for one of the most significant international heritage preservation projects of the twentieth century. The issue highlighted the importance of global cooperation in safeguarding humanity’s shared cultural legacy and recognized the value of protecting ancient monuments for the benefit of future generations.
