Issued in 1964 as part of the Local Dhows series of the French Somali Coast (Côte Française des Somalis), this stamp commemorates the Sambouk, a traditional wooden dhow widely used throughout the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the western Indian Ocean. For centuries, sambouks played a vital role in regional maritime trade, fishing, and transportation, linking coastal communities and facilitating the exchange of goods, people, and ideas across the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa.
